My son, who is 21, is losing his hair. Both grandfathers, his father and both my brothers lost their hair at an early age, but not as young as my son. He has been under a lot of stress lately. Is there anything he can do?
The heredity factor is dominant and stress does not help, but the following treatment should slow down further loss, strengthen the hair that is there and stimulate the follicles. In a glass bottle with a dropper, blend three drops each of rosemary, cypress and grapefruit essential oils, six of lavender and one of ginger. Each night, add two drops of this blend to 20 drops of water, rub it over the scalp and leave on overnight. Every morning when showering, alternate very hot and very cold water on the scalp and, if necessary, use only a mild hypoallergenic shampoo. Results will take months but he'll smell gorgeous.
I suffer from floaters in my eyes. What causes them and are there any alternative remedies to help me get rid of them?
Floaters can be a sign of a detached retina, so if you haven't already done so, visit an ophthalmologist. If you have myopia, are stressed, tired, or worried about the floaters, you will be more likely to notice them. The Bates method teaches you to relax and to use your eyes and brain in different ways to improve the way you see - you will learn to be able to see beyond the floaters and to focus on your surroundings. Can you suggest anything that will help with the dreadful sickness (not just nausea but serious vomiting, particularly in the mornings) brought on by radiotherapy?
The British Medical Association brought out a report in 2000 called Acupuncture: Efficacy, Safety And Practice which showed that acupuncture is very effective in stopping nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy. The most effective acupuncture point for this is called Heart Governor 6 and is located two inches from the wrist crease in the centre of the forearm between the two tendons. Press this with the opposite thumb, firmly and inwards, for eight seconds three times on each forearm, and repeat as needed. Rubbing rather than pressing this point can work better for some people. Traditional acupuncture uses other points that will help - to find a local practitioner, contact the British Acupuncture Council, 020-8735 0400 (Acupuncture).
I am going to China next year and everyone tells me a supply of Imodium is necessary. Can you suggest anything natural instead?
Imodium will stop the diarrhoea but will also stop the body eliminating the poison, bacteria or virus that is causing the problem. Garlic capsules kill bacteria and parasites, and strengthen the immune system - take two, three times daily. Take a multi-mineral daily to reduce the likelihood of depletion and take probiotics to line the intestines with 'friendly' bacteria. If you do get diarrhoea, boil half a cup of brown rice in three cups of water for 45 minutes. Strain this and drink three cups of the rice water daily. Eat the rice to help form solid stools and give you necessary B vitamins. Take along a bottle of Spanish Tummy Mixture (£5.25 plus p&p), a herbal remedy for diarrhoea from Potters, 01942 405100 (Potters).
