A surgeon advertised as the UK's leading expert in penis enlargement went before the General Medical Council yesterday.

Ravi Agarwal, of Stockport in Greater Manchester, was described in Men's Health magazine as having "unrivalled experience" that would make the penis one to three inches longer and increase its girth by 30% to 90%. Dr Agarwal, who practices privately in Harley Street in London and at a clinic in Manchester, denies a charge of serious professional misconduct.

A Mr A of Manchester responded to the ad and paid £3,250 for the procedure. David Enoch, for the GMC, said it meant injecting fat into the organ, and dividing a ligament to try to make it hang lower. "It hardly ever works," he told the hearing. "The fat is often absorbed, so either there is no improvement or the patient is left with a lumpy and irregular penis. There was no increase in length; in fact [Mr A] thought it was shorter."

A similar complaint was made by Mr B of Sheffield, who wanted a larger penis to aid his job as a kissogram.

"[Afterward] I couldn't go to the toilet for two days," Mr B told the hearing. "There was tremendous swelling for six or seven weeks." He returned four or five times for injections, to no avail. "Since the last one, it's been bent," said Mr B. The hearing adjourned until today.
