A new insurance policy is being launched for women who want bigger breasts but are worried their body may reject the implants, it was announced today.

The Breast Assured policy, which is being offered by specialist insurance broker Trafalgar Risk Management (TRM), will cover women against the risk of infection or the new implants being rejected.

Between 5% and 10% of women develop capsular contracture after having implants. In these cases scar tissue around the implant contracts, distorting it and making it hard.

TRM said this was the main concern for the majority of women undergoing the cosmetic surgery.

Kelvin Wheat, managing director of TRM, said women often took out a loan or paid for the surgery using their credit card and did not have enough money to put the problem right.

But he said that despite this, no other leading healthcare insurer offered cover in case the implant was rejected.

The policy costs £500 and will pay out up to £5,000 to have the old implants removed and new ones put in.

However, it does not insure against the surgeon making a mistake, such as putting in the wrong size of implants, as the group said this was the surgeon's responsibility. Mr Wheat said: "This is the first time in the UK that a woman worried about the consequences of having an operation of this nature can rest assured that in the event of anything going wrong, her insurance policy will come into effect and cover her for any necessary corrective surgery."

The group is launching the policy tomorrow at the Two Cities Ball, an annual fundraising event held by the Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association.

It is offering an auction prize of breast implants worth up to £4,000 and a Breast Assured policy.
