Thousands of people are to be recruited for Britain's first DNA databank to help scientists understand how genes work with lifestyle factors to create disease, The Observer can reveal.

Scientists have identified a gene that seems to prevent ovarian
cancer. They found that the gene was "switched off" in almost 90% of
the ovarian tumours in their study.
